3

Choose community activities and everyday experiences that suit your interests, energy and goals.

What a stay may include

  • Assistance with personal and daily living tasks such as showering, cooking and toileting
  • Standard short-stay or respite accommodation
  • Support in a shared or individual setting, depending on assessed need
  • Medication prompts or support where agreed
  • Overnight support matched to the participant’s usual level of support
  • Coordination with family, carers and support teams

Important: Under current NDIS guidance, short-term accommodation funding cannot pay for food, meals, holiday packages, airfares or family travel costs. Participants should only pay for supports they actually use.

Who respite and STA can support

Short-term accommodation may suit eligible NDIS participants who live with primary informal supports or receive daily drop-in support and need disability-related care while their usual carers take a planned break.

Current NDIS guidance says it is usually funded for up to 28 days per year and can be used flexibly, including blocks of up to 14 days at a time. Availability, staffing and funding must be confirmed before a stay.

Read the current NDIS short-term accommodation guidance.

Respite and Short-Term Accommodation questions

Is NDIS respite the same as short-term accommodation?

People often use “respite” to describe a planned break from usual caring arrangements. The NDIS support is called short-term accommodation and focuses on the participant’s disability-related support needs during that time.

How many days of STA can the NDIS fund?

Current NDIS guidance says short-term accommodation is usually funded for up to 28 days per year and may be used flexibly, including a block of up to 14 days at a time. The participant must use funding in line with their plan.

What can short-term accommodation funding pay for?

It may fund disability supports for everyday activities and standard accommodation in a shared or individual setting. The funded support should reflect the level of support the participant usually needs.

Does STA funding include food or holiday costs?

No. Current NDIS guidance says short-term accommodation funding cannot pay for food or meals, cruises, holiday packages, airfares, theme parks or travel and accommodation costs for family members.

Can I use STA funding from my Core budget?

Funding arrangements depend on the participant’s current plan and the latest NDIS rules. Speak with your my NDIS contact or support coordinator before booking so the support and claim category are confirmed.

Is STA emergency or crisis accommodation?

No. NDIS short-term accommodation does not replace homelessness, crisis or mainstream accommodation services. If an urgent situation is related to disability support needs, contact your my NDIS contact or support coordinator to discuss the appropriate pathway.

Can I inspect respite accommodation before booking?

Where practical, our team can arrange a discussion, virtual introduction or inspection so you can understand the property, accessibility, household and support model.

Do you offer NDIS respite in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney?

Eden Ability is based in Mascot and accepts short-term accommodation enquiries from Bondi, Randwick, Maroubra, Mascot and nearby Eastern Suburbs communities, as well as Greater Sydney. Every stay is subject to funding, support requirements and a suitable vacancy.
